“The world passeth away, and the lust thereof” – says the Latin inscription below the Corpus Clock in Cambridge. The most amazing clock, built to remind us, its viewers, in a dramatic way the inevitable passing of time. The Chronophage (literally “time eater”, from Greek) the grasshopper or locust moves its mouth, appearing to “eat up” the seconds as they pass, and occasionally it “blinks” in seeming satisfaction.
So are the attractions of Cambridge: amazingly goth, surreal and full of history.
Sure, you can visit the many colleges making up Cambridge (Summer after the exams is the best time to visit), but Cambridge, although seemingly closed off, is far off from that. From its narrow and small old streets to the vast lands and gardens of the colleges open to the public, Cambridge is very much a very tourist-y town.
A close bus drive away from London (and Luton, if you’re flying in – just around 40 min), I found Cambridge relaxing and quite the place to be. While exams were still beginning at the very late end of May, we found a way to sneak by and see the famous Bridge of Sighs at St. John’s College.
Besides colleges and its many pubs (the oldest one is The Eagle, opened in 1667), Cambridge also offers: Cambridge Market, Trinity Street (where all the shops are), river Cam – the punting never stops and sunny weather is best for such an activity that lets you enter all the colleges year round.
Do join me next time as we travel from wonderful and peaceful Cambridge to York. See you there!
