The oldest inhabitable settlement in the world, an ancient city wreaked by poverty just a few decades ago, now a UNESCO site full of shops, restaurants and little “casa grotta” museums. Matera is something else. The Sassi (the oldest part of Matera) consist of approximately twelve levels spanning the height of 380 m, connected by a network of paths, stairways, and courtyards (vicinati). To get to each side you need to walk its many cute narrow streets that feel like a maze. Matera is delightful, surprising and unique.
Its uniqueness is what draws you in. Looking at all the little nooks and details of its streets, even in photographs you still discover things you thought you already saw, but no. There are so many details that the human eye just cannot comprehend in the moment. I can say I would return again, to see it in the Summer, to see it at night, when the Autumn cold and rain doesn’t drive you away to hide inside for the rest of your evening. But what a sight to see it was.
As always,
I was wearing: Hoodie // Tezenis, Scarf // Primark (old), Leggings // Tezenis, Top // Esmara (Lidl), Sandals // Altercore, Socks // Tezenis, Bag // Guess.
