Beautiful Corfu Island, a little piece of heaven where the cicadas make a noise that is atmospheric, enigmatic and very, very loud. Its cultural heritage reflects years spent under Venetian, French and British rule. Never mind that this island is the birthplace of Prince Philip.
We stayed in Corfu Town and most of our days were spent on Royal Baths Mon Repos beach. I will leave you with the most gorgeous photos, but before that I am going to leave a few tips of where to go and what you can see in Corfu. For a 8 day stay in Corfu we had plenty to do:
- Corfu Town – a jewel city, with narrow beautiful streets and markets, restaurants, hotels, yachts and private beaches. Wherever you stay on Corfu island, Corfu Town is the number one thing to see. Every restaurant has Greek traditional foods and a selection of great wines (I’m a big fan of white wine, everywhere was served ice cold and everywhere was delicious).
- Messonghi and Messonghi Beach – on the east coast of the island. It’s where we ate like Greek kings. The most delicious seafood, fresh served from the sea at the Bacchus Tavern.
- Enjoy a beautiful view over Corfu at the 75 Steps Taverna and Hotel and eat the most delicious lemon tart. The hotel nestles in the tiny mountain village of Spileo. We enjoyed the most spectacular of sunsets on the island.
- Glyfada Beach – one of the best beaches in Corfu. It hosts another spectacular sunset, the most gorgeous sand I ever dipped my toes in in my life and crystal clear waters. It is a very long beach so do take care of your skin, its umbrellas are very scarce. We had to buy one just for a day here.
- Enjoy another breathtaking view over Paleokastritsa at the Golden Fox Restaurant. The food is not that great but the views are simply spectacular.
- Go up and visit one of the last remaining traditional mountain villages in Corfu – Makrades. Its quaint and charming little streets are a distant and very quiet option for those who seek to see just a few people in their vacation. Enjoy traditional snacks and the best watermelon natural juice at the coffee shop in the village center and go further up to see another breathtaking and wild view of the island and sea on a downhill road full of olive trees.
Corfu Island is a 3 hour drive from Thessaloniki to Igoumenitsa plus the ferry ride to Corfu Island that is 2 hours long. Because it was a long journey coming from Timisoara, Romania, we had to split it in half and enjoyed a 2 day stay in Thessaloniki – my favorite Summer city.
