The whimsy and witchery of York can be felt in its wonderful small streets and historical corners. I tried to capture its historical marvel in the photos below. But don’t get me wrong, York offers much more than The Shambles (and Little Shambles) – a cute and magical street that you probably must have seen in the many British TV shows involving witches.
The very huge 13th century Gothic Cathedral welcomes you as you exit the train station. So are the city walls, that you can hop on and off as you make your way visiting the city. River Ouse offers boat trips and party sceneries at night, especially Saturday night on any given Summer night.
But wait there’s more: just outside of York is Castle Howard (Bridgerton Season 1 had one of its filming locations there), with its huge estate. The castle is a marvelous historic country house with lots of rooms and gardens to visit. It’s a very must. Another little spa town just north of York is Knaresborough – “the little Venice of Yorkshire“. The town center is perched on the cliffs above the River Nidd and the imposing railway viaduct across the Nidd Gorge offers an amazing view to visitors as they arrive by train. If you pass the viaduct by train one station after, you will find Harrogate – another spa town famous for its posh shops and cafes and lush gardens and parks.
